(Near the Port of Hull, England)
Died: 15 March 1687 in
Middlesex County, Virginia. A lawyer and vestryman of Christ Church parish, Clerk of the House of Burgesses He was placed in command of the royal forces during Bacon's Rebellion. One of Bacon's early proclamations included him among the "wicked and pernicious Counsellors, aides and Assistors [of Berkeley] against the Commonalty in these our cruell Commotions." He received from the Governor high commendation for his zealous and effective service: "Whereas many frequent and successful services to his Sacred Majesty, this Country, and me, his Majesties Governor of it, Major Beverley has proved himself to be most loyall, Circumspect, and courageous in his majesties Service for the good of his country, and the suppressing of this late horrid Rebellion, began by Bacon, and continued since his death by Ingram, Lawrence, Hansford and others, the last of which he the said Robert Beverley, with courage and admirable conduct, never to be forgotten, this day brought to me." (Proclamation of Governor Berkeley, 13 November 1676)
Later he incurred the displeasure of the Governor by refusing to turn over certain legislative journals. He was arrested and kept prisoner on board the ship Duke of York, and then on the Concord. He was transferred to Colonel Custis's sloop, but escaped. He was taken into custody again at his house in Middlesex and sent to Northampton. In 1683 new charges were brought against him, that he had made up the journal and inserted His Majesty's letters therein, notwithstanding it had first been presented at the time of the prorogation, and that he had refused copies of the Journal to the Governor and Council (to which he felt they were not entitled without permission of the House). He died a few months later.

Title: COLONEL
Elizabeth married Govenor Benjamin HARRISON on 29 Jun 1814 in Porto Bello, , Brunswick, Virginia, USA. Benjamin was born on 5 Apr 1726 in Berkley, Charles City, Virginia, USA. He died on 24 Apr 1791 in City Point, Charles City, Virginia, USA. He was buried in 1791 in Harrison Cemetery, Lancaster, Virginia, USA.
BIOGRAPHY: One of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Benjamin Harrison, the most conservative of the Virginia signers except for Carter Braxton, was a
member of one of the most prominent planter families in the South and was the fifth in a line of active
politicians bearing the same name. Because of his rotundity, joviality, love of good foods and wines, and
fondness for luxury, he acquired the nickname "Falstaff of Congress." His son, William Henry, and his
great-grandson, Benjamin, served as the ninth and 23d Presidents of the United States.
Harrison was born in 1726 at his father's estate, Berkeley, in Charles City County, Va. He matriculated
at the College of William and Mary, but left before graduating in 1745 upon the death of his father in
order to assume management of the family plantation. Shortly thereafter he married; seven of his
children were to survive infancy. In time, his landholdings grew to include eight plantations and other
properties, and he also expanded into shipping and ship building. Following the precedent set by his
forebears, about 1749 he gained admission to the House of Burgesses. He sat there, frequently as
speaker, until 1774, when the Royal Governor disbanded the body.
Harrison's conservatism manifested itself early in the Revolutionary movement. In 1764 the burgesses,
learning about the Stamp Act, impending in Parliament, named a committee to draw up a protest. As
one of the committeemen, Harrison helped pen the document. The very next year, however, when the
act went into effect, he refused to endorse Patrick Henry's resolutions urging civil disobedience as a
countermeasure. Forced to take a stand as the rift with the Crown widened, Harrison cast his lot with the
patriots. Between 1773 and 1776, he shared in the tasks of the Revolutionary conventions, the
committee of correspondence, and the provincial congresses.
Meantime, in 1774, Harrison had been appointed to the First Continental Congress. Although usually
silent on the floor, he made valuable contributions on the foreign affairs, marine, military, and financial
committees. As chairman of the committee of the whole (1776-77), he chaired the deliberations leading
up to the adoption of the Declaration and the early debates on the proposed Articles of Confederation.
In 1777, the same year Harrison withdrew from Congress, he entered the lower house of the Virginia
legislature, where he presided as speaker in the years 1778-81. His three terms as Governor (1781-84)
reflected the ascendancy in Virginia of the conservatives, who included in addition to Harrison and
Braxton such former extremists as Patrick Henry and Richard Henry Lee. Succeeded by Henry, Harrison
rejoined the legislature (1784-91), holding the speakership part of the time. In 1788 at the Virginia
ratifying convention he objected to the Federal Constitution because it lacked a bill of rights. Once
ratification had occurred, however, he supported the new Government. Three years later, Harrison died
in his mid-sixties at Berkeley and was buried there in the family cemetery.

After his death, Tecumseh passed a spell which became known as "The Curse of Tecumseh". Under
this curse, Tecumseh decreed that any man elected President of the United States in a year divisible by
20 would die in office.
Under this curse, seven presidents have died in office. These were William Henry Harrison, who was
elected in 1840, Lincoln, who was elected in 1860, Garfield, who was elected in 1880, McKinley, who
was elected in 1900, Harding, who was elected in 1920, Roosevelt, who was elected in 1940 and
Kennedy, who was elected in 1960.
History students find it useful to remember this, because only one other president has died in office.
That was Zachary Taylor, who died in 1850 before Tecumseh had settled on the details of his curse.
The first to break the curse was President Reagan, who was elected in 1980 and who was shot, but the
bullet missed his heart by a quarter of an inch. Reagan remained technically alive, although brain dead.
Most agree that the curse is now over and that Baby Bush will be safe. In addition, since Bush was not
elected but was appointed by the US Supreme Court, the famous Curse of Tecumseh may not apply.
However, there are a few who still wonder. How long do old Indian curses last anyway?
BIOGRAPHY: William Henry Harrison
"Give him a barrel of hard cider and settle a pension of two thousand a year on him, and my word for it,"
a Democratic newspaper foolishly gibed, "he will sit ... by the side of a 'sea coal' fire, and study moral
philosophy. " The Whigs, seizing on this political misstep, in 1840 presented their candidate William
Henry Harrison as a simple frontier Indian fighter, living in a log cabin and drinking cider, in sharp
contrast to an aristocratic champagne-sipping Van Buren.
Harrison was in fact a scion of the Virginia planter aristocracy. He was born at Berkeley in 1773. He
studied classics and history at Hampden-Sydney College, then began the study of medicine in
Richmond.
Suddenly, that same year, 1791, Harrison switched interests. He obtained a commission as ensign in
the First Infantry of the Regular Army, and headed to the Northwest, where he spent much of his life.
In the campaign against the Indians, Harrison served as aide-de-camp to General "Mad Anthony"
Wayne at the Battle of Fallen Timbers, which opened most of the Ohio area to settlement. After
resigning from the Army in 1798, he became Secretary of the Northwest Territory, was its first delegate
to Congress, and helped obtain legislation dividing the Territory into the Northwest and Indiana
Territories. In 1801 he became Governor of the Indiana Territory, serving 12 years.
His prime task as governor was to obtain title to Indian lands so settlers could press forward into the
wilderness. When the Indians retaliated, Harrison was responsible for defending the settlements.
The threat against settlers became serious in 1809. An eloquent and energetic chieftain, Tecumseh,
with his religious brother, the Prophet, began to strengthen an Indian confederation to prevent further
encroachment. In 1811 Harrison received permission to attack the confederacy.
While Tecumseh was away seeking more allies, Harrison led about a thousand men toward the
Prophet's town. Suddenly, before dawn on November 7, the Indians attacked his camp on Tippecanoe
River. After heavy fighting, Harrison repulsed them, but suffered 190 dead and wounded.
The Battle of Tippecanoe, upon which Harrison's fame was to rest, disrupted Tecumseh's confederacy
but failed to diminish Indian raids. By the spring of 1812, they were again terrorizing the frontier.
In the War of 1812 Harrison won more military laurels when he was given the command of the Army in
the Northwest with the rank of brigadier general. At the Battle of the Thames, north of Lake Erie, on
October 5, 1813, he defeated the combined British and Indian forces, and killed Tecumseh. The Indians
scattered, never again to offer serious resistance in what was then called the Northwest.
Thereafter Harrison returned to civilian life; the Whigs, in need of a national hero, nominated him for
President in 1840. He won by a majority of less than 150,000, but swept the Electoral College, 234 to 60.
When he arrived in Washington in February 1841, Harrison let Daniel Webster edit his Inaugural
Address, ornate with classical allusions. Webster obtained some deletions, boasting in a jolly fashion
that he had killed "seventeen Roman proconsuls as dead as smelts, every one of them."
Webster had reason to be pleased, for while Harrison was nationalistic in his outlook, he emphasized in
his Inaugural that he would be obedient to the will of the people as expressed through Congress.
But before he had been in office a month, he caught a cold that developed into pneumonia. On April 4,
1841, he died--the first President to die in office--and with him died the Whig program

Wiltshire England
HISTORY: Description in 1822:
"This county is situated in the province of Canterbury, in the diocese of Salisbury, and contains 29
hundreds, one city, 15 boroughs, and 10 other market-towns. On the north and west side of it lies
Gloucestershire; its western boundary is Somersetshire; Dorsetshire confines its southern extremity; and
Hampshire and Berkshire inclose it on the east. Its extreme length is 54 miles, and breadth 34, and its
area measures about 878,000 acres. The air of Wiltshire like that of other counties, is various, according
to the different parts of it, but on the whole it is agreeable and salubrious. On the downs and higher
parts, it is sharp and clear; in the vallies mild, even in winter. Over the extensive wilds, called Salisbury
plain, roam immense flocks of sheep, who with their shepherds, are the sole tenants, if the bustard, the
wheatear, and a few other solitary birds be excepted, which avoid the haunts of men. The summer stock
of sheep on these plains and downs, is computed to be 500,000. The rivers of this county are the Lower
Avon; the Thames or Isis; the Cole; the Kennet; the Bourne; the Upper Avon; the Willey; and the Nadder.
