DUDLEY
Another name in the ancestry of the Hicks/Kennedy families is Dudley. Mary (Dudley) Jeter, mother of Catherine "Caty" Jeter who married Bishop Hicks (not to be confused with Willis Bishop Hicks) was the daughter of John Dudley, Jr. and Ursula Beverly.
John Dudley was a descendant of the Dudley who settled in Middlesex County, Virginia.
Ursula Beverly was the daughter of Robert Beverly and Ursula Byrd. Robert Beverly's parents were Major Robert Beverly and Mary Keeble. Ursula Byrd's father was Col.William Byrd.
The known children of John and Ursula Dudley were as follows:
John, Jr., Thomas, William, Jane (born cl733), Mary (born cl732), Ann and Ursula.According to Caroline County, Virginia Court Order Books sometime during 1742-45, John and Ursula Dudley sold three tracts of land.
John Dudley died before March 8, 1750, as on that date his will was presented in the Caroline County Court by his sons John Jr. and William. on that same date, Jane and
Mary Dudley chose as their guardian, their brother William. William was also appointed to be guardian of Ann, the youngest daughter.
On September 21, 1752, William Dudley, as guardian of Mary and Jane, presented an account of their share of their father's estate. John Odom believes that by 1852 Mary and Jane were married to Samuel Jeter and Samuel Sneed, respectively. Both girls would subsequently have sons named "Dudley". During the period 1750-65, several Dudley and Jeter families left the Essex-Caroline area and moved to Nottoway Parish in Amelia County, Virginia. on November 23, 1769, Amelia County, Virginia, Andrew Lea/Lee and Elizabeth Dudley, daughter of Thomas Dudley, were married. The witnesses present were William Dudley and Jane Sneed, brother and sister of Thomas Dudley.
William Dudley died in Nottoway County, Virginia, but made a non-cupative will on February 2, 1799, shortly before his death. He was married to Racheal Knight (his second wife) and since they had no children, he left his property to his wife during her lifetime, and after her death the property was to be divided equally among all the children of his three sisters. According to Granville County, North Carolina Records, on August 4, 1800, Mary (Dudley) Jeter of Wake County North Carolina granted a Power Of Attorney to her son Robert Jeter of Granville County, to collect her share of her deceased brother's estate.
According to Court Records of both Nottaway County, VA and Granville County, NC, Samuel Sneed and his wife Jane Sneed, and Mary Jeter, Granville County, sold 133 Acres of land in Nottoway County. This acreage was a part of the tract of land on which William Dudley, deceased, once lived. Racheal Dudley paid 600 pounds for the land. Apparently she acquired a widow's dower for part of the tract of land.
In December of 1801, Stephen Sneed for Samuel Sneed, Robert Jeter for Mary Jeter, and Andrew Lea for Elizabeth (daughter of Thomas Dudley), all of North Carolina, sold property which they had inherited from William Dudley in Nottoway County, Virginia.
Stephen Sneed, son of Samuel Sneed, was Clerk of the Court for Granville County, North Carolina in 1802.

here says that due to all the times the name RANSOM is used by both of the sons--Ransom and Peter, I
believe that this woman was NOT a Rand. The name RAND does not appear anywhere in the pedigree.
With Southern naming patterns using the surnames of the women--sometimes for many generations ,
where are the RANDs? No one has yet been able to produce a document of any sort which would
connect a Susannah RAND to a Richard FOSTER. (27 Jun 2001)
DEATH: Not mentioned in Richard Foster's will, presumably Susannah was dead by the time the will
was drawn up, as was the daughter (Elizabeth Foster) who bore Susannah Ransome Clark, the
granddaughter mentioned in the will.
Susannah married Richard FOSTER about 1747 in , Isle of Wight, Virginia, USA. Richard was born about 1723 in , Gloucester, Virginia, USA. He died in Dec 1794 in , Surry, Virginia, USA.

BIOGRAPHY: Later information shows that this Richard Foster's passage was paid by Bartholomew
Hoskins, ancient planter, and both him and Richard migrated to Lower Norfolk County, VA where both
became prominent members of the social and political society.
Capt. Ed Dittmer, retired naval officer, was the first to cast doubts on Richard being the immigrant and
placed James Foster of Gloucester County as the most likely immigrant. This revelation was met with
little interest by most researchers since it broke the tie with English royalty. However, there were
several researchers, including Miriam Wood Dye of Memphis, TN, Gerneva Foster Dennis of Abilene
(now Chicago), and myself who required more than "tradition" to accept the 1635 immigrant as our
immigrant. We offer the following information for your consideration:
Richard Foster of the 1635 HMS Safety was transported by Bartholomew Hoskins. We have
documentation that Bartholomew married, in England, Dorcus Foster, widow with two small children.
Bartholomew was called father by Richard. (March 2, 1639/40.)
Conclusion - Richard of the 1635 HMS Safety was the son of Dorcus Foster and an unknown father and
the step-son of Bartholomew Hoskins. We must assume that it was this Richard Foster who migrated,
with Bartholomew Hoskins, into Lower Norfolk County, VA.
We do know that Bartholomew Hoskins and Mrs. Dorcus Foster had children and one was a daughter,
Dorcus, who married a Richard Foster (from Hoskins family history). However, it could not have been
the 1635 Richard Foster as she was only 5-6 years old when Richard called Bartholomew father and
besides Dorcus was his half-sister.
Conclusions - There were two Richard Foster's found in Lower Norfolk. The second Richard Foster
could have been the Richard Foster who came to Virginia in late 1630s or early 1640s and was a lawyer.
He has been reported as Richard Worster. He was the Clerk of the Court, etc and signed his name as "
ffoster" which looks like a "W." Now, both Fosters were literate as indicated by many documents.
There was at least one other Richard Foster in Lower Norfolk. He was found on Bennetts Creek on
March 25, 1653/4 and signed his name with an"X", i.Ed., he could neither read nor write. So, this
separates him from the above two. It could be he who married Ann Jackson and fathered a child before
marriage as shown in Lower Norfolk records.
There was another Richard Foster (Deed Book B, Lower Norfolk Co., VA, p. 51) at an inquest
concerning the death of Jacob Bradshaw on April 11,1647. This Richard was also illiterate and signed
his name with a mark "ff." He could have been the same illiterate Richard Foster (above). However, his
mark was "ff" and not "X."
Conclusion - There were three and possibly four Richard Fosters in LowerNorfolk who are potentially our
immigrant: (1) Richard Foster of the Safety, step-son of Bartholomew Hoskins, (2) Richard Foster, the
lawyer, (3) Richard Foster, who may have married Anne Jackson whose mark was "X" and, (4) Richard
Foster, the Witness, whose mark was "ff."
Now which, if any, was our immigrant? One of these Richard Foster's married Dorcus Hoskins and
received a land patent in 1651 for the transport of himself, his wife Dorcus, and daughter, Dorcus, Jr. He
probably was Richard Foster, the Lawyer, as Richard, the Step-son was in England during this time
(more on this later). This Richard Foster was probably the Richard Foster who was a member of the
House of Burgass and was called first Lt. and then Capt. and then Major Foster and followed his father-in
-law, Bartholomew Hoskins, and brother-in-law, Richard Hoskins into North Carolina. We can eliminate
him as our immigrant. Richard Foster, step-son of Bartholomew, was in England from 1648 to1654. He
could be our immigrant. Then there are the illiterate Richard Foster's. They are possible candidates,
however, not likely as we must assume that our immigrant was literate as he came from a knighted
father, Sir Robert Foster.
There was a Richard Foster who received 200 acres of land in Mackjack Bay (later called Gloucester
County, VA). This land joined Col. George Ludlow, who was in the records of Jamestown and Lower
Norfolk Counties. Now, Richard Foster, step-son of Bartholomew Hoskins was in England until 1654
and the land was patented on April 1, 1655. Could this have been the Richard Foster who patented that
land? Could this have been Richard Foster who married Susan Garnett and became our immigrant
ancestor. We have no proof or even an indication that it is so - the land or the marriage.
So, considering all of these Richards, the step-son is the most likely, "IF" our ancestor immigrant was a
Richard Foster. If we assume this, then all the records in Lower Norfolk that deals with Richard Foster
must concern the others. If this be so, then what was our immigrant doing from1635 to 1655?
Even the doubters disagree with, is the more likely Richard Foster, our immigrant: (1), (2), (3), or (4). I
(Bill Foster) guess I am the most deviant of them all, along with Capt. Ed (I cannot speak for Miriam or
Geneva), as we do not believe that a Richard Foster was our immigrant.
Our candidate is the James Foster who was living in Kingston Parish,Gloucester (now Matthews)
County, VA and was a neighbor of John Garnett. The Foster's and the Garnett's were closely
associated and intermarried several generations. Robert and John Foster, brothers and assumed
siblings of Richard Foster, bought land in Essex County in 1692 close to a James Foster. Although
circumstantial, it is compelling evidence that Robert named his first sons, Robert and James and not
Richard (Richard was his fourth child, after John). We present this information to you for your
consideration and to elicit your comments.

were the grand-sons of Alexander Conyers, Earl of Bucan, who was descended from Roger de Quincy,

It has been accepted for years by most researchers that the immigrant of the Southern Fosters was a
Richard Foster, son of Sir Robert Foster and Miss Isham, who sailed from London on August 10, 1635
on the ship, Safety, arriving in Virginia in the fall. That he first married an Ann and then a Sussan
Garnett and became the father of two known sons, Robert and John of Gloucester and later Essex
County, Virginia.

Here is a website suggesting that another possibility is that our
Richard Foster migrated
from White Church, Hampshire, England about 100 years after the known Richard (1619) came to
Virginia. I need to do more research in England....
WEBSITE: This website says that Richard Foster (immigrant ancestor had a father in England and a
brother (Thomas Foster) in Virginia. See http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/f/o/s/Richard-

Marriage 1 Susannah RAND b: ABT. 1723
Children -
Ransome FOSTER b: ABT. 1743 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia
Peter G. FOSTER b: 22 MAR 1756 in Gloucester County, Virginia
MISC_NOTES: I have researched all the birth, marriage, death, poor people, land owners, moving into
and out of Whitchurch, Hampshire, England from 1600 to 1800 and find no evidence of my Richard born
in 1723 of coming from this area. There was a John Foster who had 7 children all christened in the local
church at Whitchurch. I no longer believe my Richard was born here. I will concentrate my efforts now
in Colonial Gloucester County, Virginia. glf
MISC_NOTES: Lived 72 years.
MISC_NOTES: Robert L. Jackson says that the father of Richard Foster (1723) is Robert Foster(1660-
1670) son of Richard Foster (1619) (the immigrant ancestor). I would like to believe this version but
Robert Foster is possibly too old (53 to 63) to father Richard in 1723 and some researchers say Richard
Foster was born in White Church, Hampshire, England? It is also suggested that Richard's wife,
Susannah Rand was age 5 to 10 when she married and that she waited 15 more years before starting to
bear children? Something is wrong with the marriage date. Also, note the difference of 6 years between
1st son Beverly Ransom Foster and next son, Peter G. Foster. Are we missing some children? glf
MISC_NOTES: Gary Foster (2001) I need to see if I can prove the possiblility that the Richard Foster,
1723 born in White Church, Hampshire, England ties into this Thomas Foster from the same place in
England. As of (15 August 2005) having just viewed many microfilms at the Family History Library in
Salt Lake City, Utah concerning all Foster's that could be found in WhitChurch, Hampshire, England it is
my conclusion that I cannot find any proof of Foster's living in, moving out, being christened, married,
died, buried or being of the poor folks. It almost appears that only a few Foster's ever lived here and
those names are recorded in the "Research Project" for Richard Foster & Susannah Rand on my
website at http://foster.surnames.com/foster_research_project/research_source_checklist_richard_foster

says that a Ransom Foster born about 1780 to 1831 had a father named William "Mill Creek Billy"
Foster born in 1752 - 1792 in Amelia County, Virginia.
MISC_NOTES: Notes of Gary Foster - Beverly Ransome may have been named for his lineage. His
given name of Beverly for his mother's mother Elizabeth Beverly. His middle name of Ransome for his
father's mother (Elizabeth Ransome). Or his mother simply named her children after some of the most
prominent families in Virginia. glf
MISC_NOTES: Some researchers list Beverly Ranson Foster as Ranson and some as Ransome. Very few use his first name as Beverly. glf
Beverly married Elizabeth COMAN on 5 Sep 1772 in , York, Virgina, USA. Elizabeth was born in 1752 in , Isle of Wight, Virginia, USA. She died about 1813 in , Brunswick, Virginia, USA.
DEATH: I have found no record of a will. The last official record of her is in Brunswick C ounty, VA,
Court Order Book 26, page 45, as executrix of Ransom's will. According to Barbara Longwell, in the
Brunswick County Fiduciary Accounts, vol 8, page 107, March 12, 1814: "Estate of Elizabeth Foster
deceased is in account current with Samuel Foster adm."
MISC_NOTES: Several genealogists say that Elizabeth was an Irish woman. glf
Given name came from her mother Elizabeth Harwood. glf.
When married Elizabeth Coman used the family names of her and her husband Beverly Ransome
Foster's lineage often. glf

In 1776 the Royal
Governors of Virginia and Maryland, with an armada of over 100 British warships, troop transports,
supply ships and refugee vessels anchored off Gwynn's Island, Virginia. For almost two months the two
governors, British troops, marines, armed sailors, loyalist regiments, and the African-American Royal
Ethiopian Regiment confronted patriot forces. The island became the Governors' Island. This lively book
details the campaign by Virginia's Lord Dunmore and his British allies on the Chesapeake Bay in 1775
and 1776. Dunmore led military, naval and civilian forces of almost 3,000 persons from Williamsburg to
Yorktown, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Gwynn's Island and eventually Maryland. Dunmore's forces threatened
the Bay's commerce and its inhabitants' freedom. British reinforcements of men and arms gave
Dunmore the capability to subdue Virginia and other colonies. American patriots opposed Dunmore and
waited for the right circumstances to attack. The book is well researched with maps of the area in 1776,
British and American fortifications, ship illustrations and battle diagrams. British, Loyalist and American
units and participants are contained in detailed appendices. A comprehensive bibliography, endnotes
and an index complete this scholarly and readable story.

Note for: John Herod Foster, 24 APR 1773 - 28 SEP 1850
From Website at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~westxan/np63.htm#iin5281
Many sources list his middle name as Harwood, however I have faith
in the research of Ray Sasser, listed
below giving the name as Herod. Some sources: LDS and Nancy Foster. On his father's death, as
eldest son, he inherited the estate and remained there until his death. He was first married to Sela
Lightfoot in 1795 and had one daughter,
Nancy Harwood, before marrying Sally Braswell.
-
From Ray Sasser: "John Foster's middle name was "Herod," and he
seems to have been known to family and friends simply by that
name-"Herod"-and not by the name John, though official documents
usually use "
John." There are other people in Brunswick, not necessarily related to Braswells, with middle names of "Herod." Why it was popular, I don't know. If the name derives originally from a family named "Harwood," this would not surprise me, but by the nineteenth century in Brunswick County, the given name was always "Harod."
Another interesting name in Brunswick County that modern researchers
like to alter to fit modern
ideas was the middle name of "Hutson"; people like to change it to "Hudson." That name also pops up in the Braswell family tree."
